Queen Street hit the media radar across Australia, when tree planting works abruptly halted after it was discovered they were to be installed in the shared parking and bike zone marked by paint in the road pavement.

Last Tuesday’s (13 October) meeting, facilitated by WBG at Gippsland Business Centre, gave Queen Street traders and the cycling community an opportunity to discuss concerns with Council representatives.

Road user safety, traffic movement and parking in the shared commercially zoned road space was at the heart of most issues raised.

Post meeting, a number of WBG members wrote emails expressing concerns and contributed many positive ideas for improving the appearance of Warragul’s streetscape.

A follow up meeting is scheduled between WBG executives and Council representatives to discuss concerns and ideas put forward.  Outcomes of this meeting will be communicated to all members.

An initial consultation process is now being set up with CBD businesses relating to proposed streetscape works.  Consequently, a meeting has been scheduled this Tuesday 20 October at 10.30am at Baw Baw Shire Council Chambers in Warragul.

The following is an extract from Baw Baw Shire Council’s web post on the topic:

The $3.8 million project aims to reinvigorate the retail precinct of Warragul as intended by the Warragul Town Centre and Station Precinct Masterplans.

Council will undertake community consultation on the desired outcomes of the project with relevant business owners and occupiers and key stakeholders in the next few weeks.

Feedback from the consultation process will be considered to be incorporated in the project design.

Key activities scheduled for the 2015/16 financial year include:

  • Reviewing the concept design and completing the designs for works in Queen Street Park and Pedestrian Promenade between Smith Street and Gladstone Street; Warragul and Smith Street streetscape works between Queen Street and Palmerston Street, Warragul.
  • Formalising the two Smith Street pedestrian crossings between Palmerston and Albert Street, Warragul.
  • Finalising the design of Palmerston Street streetscape works between  Victoria Street and Smith Street, Warragul.
The final stage of the Warragul CBD Streetscape Project is scheduled to be completed by 2019/20 financial year.
